North Jersey Villages receives grant from Investors Foundation to help Garfield seniors age at home and not be alone.
North Jersey Villages recently received a grant from Investors Foundation. The grant will underwrite information sessions in the Garfield area and the production of support materials to help further North Jersey Villages’ mission of facilitating development and support of virtual villages to enable seniors to remain living at home with an enhanced quality of life.
Kathy Kuzma, North Jersey Villages Board President, said “We are grateful for the Investors Foundation’s grant award to encourage North Jersey’s efforts to introduce the Village model in Bergen County.”
A November 16th Lunch ‘n’ Learn being underwritten by the Investors Foundation grant will educate Garfield Y members and local residents on the growing national Village Movement and get their input on a Village model neighbor to neighbor assistance program at the Garfield Y.
North Jersey Villages (www.northjerseyvillages.org) is one of over 350 “villages” that have launched or are in development as members of the national Village to Village Network (www.vtvnetwork.org) originating in Beacon Hill, Boston in 2002. The Village concept engages older adults in organizing a local network of multigenerational volunteers and vetted service providers to provide information about and access to services. A Village core value is not to replicate existing services but to identify gaps in what is currently available for those choosing to age in place. Each Village is unique in determining what services are needed and what they can provide. The Village fee-based membership provides opportunities for companionship with like-minded individuals, sharing gifts and talents, negotiated discounts with local providers, assistance with transportation, minor home maintenance, and assurance of these and other benefits as members age and new needs emerge.
